Overview

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) at the National Institutes of Health offers the Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award (F99/K00) to help outstanding graduate students pursue careers as independent cancer researchers. The award will facilitate the transition of talented graduate students into successful cancer research postdoctoral appointments and provide opportunities for career development activities relevant to their long-term goals of becoming independent cancer researchers.

The F99/K00 award provides up to 6 years of support in two phases.  The initial (K99) phase will provide support for 1-2 years of dissertation research (final experiments, dissertation preparation, and selection of postdoctoral mentor).  The transition (K00) phase will provide up to 4 years of mentored postdoctoral research career development support, contingent upon successful completion of the doctoral degree requirements and on securing a postdoctoral position for further research training and career development leading to research independence.  The two award phases are intended to be continuous in time.

This is a limited submission competition, which means that students do not apply directly to NCI.  Instead, universities conduct internal competitions, and each university may submit one nomination to NCI for consideration in the national competition.

Eligibility

  • Students of any nationality or citizenship may apply.
  • Applicants must be in their 3rd or 4th year (calculated from the time of original enrollment in the graduate program) of a mentored PhD or equivalent research degree program (e.g., DrPH, ScD) in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical sciences at a domestic institution.
  • By the time the award period begins, students must be at the dissertation research stage of training, i.e., students must have passed all requirements for advancement to the PhD candidacy stage.
  • At the time the award period begins, students must be on track to graduate within two years.  The F99 phase will not be extended, nor will the K00 phase be postponed.
  • Students in dual-degree programs (e.g., MD/PhD, DVM/PhD) are not eligible.
  • Students in MD, DDS, or other clinical or health professional degree program  (e.g., DC, DMD, DNP, DO, DVM, AuD) are not eligible.
  • The F99 dissertation research stage must be in a biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research area that prepares the applicant for a career in cancer research.  The K00 postdoctoral phase must be cancer-focused.

Award Amount

  • Stipends and Salaries:
    • Stipend for F99 phase: NCI will award a stipend at the same level as the NIH National Research Service Award, which for FY2020 is $25,320.  NCI will also offer tuition and fee support.
    • Salary for K00 phase: Year 1: $60,000.  Year 2: $63,300.  Year 3: $66,600.  Year 4: $69,900.  Health insurance is included.
