What is Beyond the Professoriate?
Beyond the Professorate offers an extensive range of resources to help PhDs graduate student and postdocs understand and evaluate career options at any stage of your career journey. They provide assessment tools to help identify your career options or if you are further along, they provide resources including writing your resume, understanding the hiring process, and transitioning from your PhD to your career.

- Interview Library
This extensive collection features in-depth 1:1 interviews with PhDs from a variety of academic backgrounds. These interviews offer firsthand insights into career paths, by sharing their personal experiences, values and interests that can help guide you in your own career exploration.
- Professional Career Development
The Professional Career Development page has resources to help you identify and leverage your transferable skills to help communicate your value to employers, how to build your network and tailor your resume, and how to navigate the hiring process.
- Faculty Career Development
The Faculty Career Development page has resources to help make a plan for entering the academic job market. It covers everything from formulating application materials (cover letter, teaching statement, diversity statement, and research statement) to navigating the interview and hiring process.
- Live Webinars
Beyond the Professoriate holds frequent webinars that offer valuable strategies for career success. These sessions cover a wide range of topics ranging from career planning to strategies to utilize during your job search.
How to access
Beyond the Professoriate is FREE to Vanderbilt students and postdocs through an institutional subscription. Simply go to http://institutions.beyondprof.com/, select Vanderbilt University from the drop down menu, then use your VUnet ID/Single Sign On (SSO) and go through Duo to approve. (VUMC Postdocs will need to use your Dual ID/VU ID)
Another resource to check out is Beyond Graduate School (https://institutions.beyondgradschool.com/). Although this is primarily designed for Master’s students, many of the career development resources are applicable to PhD students and postdocs and may be useful to you.
