SHIFT Program Applications Are Open! 

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of the Short Course in Transferable Skills Training (SHIFT) Program! If you’re a PhD student in biomedical research across the US, here’s your chance to elevate your skills, fully funded by an NIGMS R25 grant.

What is the SHIFT Program?

The SHIFT Program is a transformative 9-month journey designed to equip PhD students in Biomedical Sciences with the essential transferable skills to launch and sustain a successful career in biomedical research.

Program Goals:

  • Boost awareness and develop critical skills for a confident transition into your first job.
  • Gain practical experience through hands-on practicum opportunities to refine your skillset.
  • Create a personalized Individual Development Plan (IDP) that alings with your unique skills and career aspirations.
  • Discover career paths that perfectly match your strengths, as identified through comprehensive self-assessments.

Who’s the SHIFT Program for? The SHIFT Program is perfect for PhD students looking to explore career options, craft-focused career plans, and increase job market awareness while developing essential transferable skills for various career paths.

Eligibility Criteria: PhD students specializing in Biomedical Sciences or similar fields in the US, including international students with the proper visa compliance, are welcome to apply.

Application Requirements: Applicants must complete a survey, submit a personal statement and CV or resume, and provide a recommendation form from their PhD director or PI mentor. The application deadline is January 31st, 2025.

Time Commitment: The program includes four modules:

  1. Self-awareness assessments (~1 hr/month from March to May)
  2. A 5-day short course (June 9-13, 2025)
  3. Monthly peer-mentoring group meetings (~1 hr/month from July to November)
  4. Presentation of an Individual Development Plan in November

Overall, expect to invest approximately 1-2 hours monthly from March to November, plus the 5-day short course in June.

Mandatory Participation: All components, including the all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. for the 5-day short course, are mandatory.

Selection Notification: Applicants will be notified of their selection status by February 28, 2025.
