ASPIRE UP: Grant Writing

Posted by on Thursday, October 3, 2024 in Upcoming BRET Office of Career Development Events .

1:00-1:50pm
“Vanderbilt Resources for Grant Writing”
Featuring Abigail Brown, Assistant Professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics and Director of Outcomes Research, Vanderbilt University

Dr. Brown will discuss how Vanderbilt can help you write your career development grant or fellowship application. She will cover the many resources available to help you identify funding opportunities and produce strong applications. She will also provide an overview of the (NIH) grant review process.

2:00-2:50pm
“Applying for Fellowships to Fund Your PhD and Postdoctoral Training”
Featuring Kim Petrie, Associate Professor of Medical Education and Administration and Assistant Dean for Biomedical Career Development, Vanderbilt University

There is much more to writing a successful fellowship or career development award application than putting together a top-notch research proposal (though that is a critical piece!) Dr. Petrie will give an overview of fellowships, describe “four fundamental principles” that apply to all types of fellowship awards, and discuss timelines and the “right time” to apply. Then, she will focus in on NIH NRSA fellowships to describe the various application components and how the NRSA review criteria and application forms will be changing in 2025.

3:00-3:50pm
“Writing the ‘Science’ of a Grant: Blow Their Socks Off, Not Your Foot”
Featuring C. Michael Stein, Dan May Chair in Medicine and Professor of Medicine, Vanderbilt University Medical Center

The most important principle for writing a fundable grant is for you to think like a reviewer. You want to make it as easy as possible on the reviewer to explain to others why your grant should be funded. This session will highlight some of the primary questions reviewers are seeking to answer when reading your grant. We will also look at the key components that make up each of the sections of a grant and the common criticisms you should try to avoid.

Refreshments will be served. Everyone who registers in advance will be entered in a drawing to win a copy of Dr. Stein’s book, “Not Discussed: the Unspoken Rules for a Career in Academic Medical Research,” which is an essential guide for academic career development.

Come for the food and the raffle – stay to learn valuable information to assist you in the grant writing process!
