Position Title: School of Sciences, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry: Assistant Professor
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in the School of Sciences at Elizabethtown College invites applications for a tenure-track position (9 months), at the Assistant Professor level, beginning August 1st, 2023. The chosen candidate will have teaching and research interests in the field of biochemistry.
Elizabethtown College is committed to investing in the growth of the School of Sciences. Four tenure-track hires will be carried out in the School of Science this year, and the College is looking to hire diverse faculty to support our increasingly diverse student body. The School and faculty are committed to preparing students for lifelong learning, service, and professional outcomes. Approximately 30% of Elizabethtown College students are first-generation college students.
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, consists of five full-time faculty who value collaboration, diversity of backgrounds and ideas, equity, interdisciplinary thinking, and student-focused teaching and research. The primary majors offered by the department are biochemistry and molecular biology (BMB) and chemistry, which has been certified by the American Chemical Society for over 50 years. Following a teacher-scholar model, faculty members in the department engage undergraduates in meaningful research and scientific advancement. Examples of recent outcomes from this model include faculty and student publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at national and international meetings, two Goldwater Scholarship awardees, novel curricular developments, and multiple placements of students into top graduate programs and industrial positions. Job Duties |
The teaching load is 12 contact hours per semester. The successful individual will teach science majors in upper-level biochemistry lectures and labs, foundational chemical and biological coursework and/or organic chemistry, and non-majors in the College’s Core program. The individual will work with department faculty to support a diversity of learners. The selected applicant will be an integral part of our interdisciplinary Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program and support innovative curriculum. It is also expected that a dynamic research program that engages undergraduate students will be developed. Serving as an academic advisor and participating in faculty governance is expected. Experience with or demonstrated ability to teach, mentor, and support students from historically underrepresented groups in science is preferred.
Applicants are expected to become excellent teachers and engaging research mentors, and Elizabethtown College provides support through start-up funds, faculty mentorship and professional development, and internal grant funding. Additionally, the College provides support for summer student research.

Required Qualifications |
A Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Biology or a related field is required. Groups that are traditionally underrepresented in STEM are highly encouraged to apply. Experience in working with students of culturally diverse backgrounds and/or underprepared students and demonstrated success in creating inclusive learning environments are preferred. ABD applicants are accepted with an expectation of a defense date set before July 1, 2023.
