Scientific Program Intern (Remote)
October 2023- May 2024
The mission of the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation is to develop medical students throughout their careers into the next generation of leaders in cardiovascular innovation, research, and medicine by providing mentored research experiences and lifelong community.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death around the world. Heart disease is changing – evolving into a new set of lethal disorders, notably heart feature, as patients now survive the acutely lethal manifestations of heart disease. The Sarnoff Foundation is tackling the enormous problem of heart disease by fostering, inspiring, and nurturing a new breed of physician‐investigators.
The leaders in the Sarnoff Foundation are at the very highest levels of influence in academia and industry. Sarnoff Fellows are making substantial contributions to cardiovascular health and research with their cutting-edge discoveries and innovative approaches to patient care. There are no other organizations that provide a mentoring and training experience like the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation.
The Sarnoff Foundation is seeking an intern volunteer to provide assistance with the administration of their scientific programs, including the medical student research fellowship program, alumni programs and the 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting.
Sarnoff Fellowship Program
The Sarnoff Fellowship Program offers medical students enrolled in accredited U.S. medical schools the opportunity to spend a year conducting intensive work in a biomedical research facility in the United States. Applications for the 2024-25 program are due on January 10, 2024 and the review and selection process will take place from January 15-March 15, 2024. The intern will assist the Executive Director with preparing the online applications for review, compiling reviewer scores, and providing support during the virtual interview process on March 2, 2024.
Alumni Programs
The Sarnoff Foundation supports the continued interaction among former Sarnoff Fellows (Alumni). It is this Society of Fellows, and the camaraderie that exists among its members, that make this organization unique. The Alumni are a source of support and mentorship for the new Fellows who are embarking on a career in cardiovascular research. The intern will assist in conducting the annual alumni database update and preparing demographic reports.
Annual Scientific Meeting
The Annual Scientific Meeting is designed for medical students, physician-scientists in training, and biomedical scientists (clinical investigators and basic scientists). The target audience for this program includes current and former Fellows of the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation (approximately 470), the clinical investigators and basic scientists who have participated in training these fellows (approximately 120), and interested biomedical scientists. All Fellows and former Sarnoff Fellows are, or were, medical students selected and supported for a one-year research experience during medical school. The Sarnoff Foundation invites very high profile speakers and our intern will have the opportunity to meet and network with a wide range of individuals from all sectors of the biomedical research and training enterprise. Our intern with assist in the coordination and execution of the 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting and which will take place in San Francisco April 25-27. Our intern will assist in the planning of all aspects of the Annual Scientific Meeting. The intern will participate on Program Committee virtual meetings, manage the meeting website, including formating abstracts for the sessions, and help coordinate event planning and on site logistics with guidance and oversight from Sarnoff Foundation staff and the Program Committee.
Our intern will work closely with Dana Boyd, Executive Director of the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation, and Patty Kehoe, the Sarnoff Foundation’s Program Manager, the Alumni Committee and the Annual Meeting Program Committee.
THE PARTICIPANT WILL:
- Gain experience in organizing and planning a national meeting
- Gain experience in the review of scientific grants and selection of awardees
- Meet and interact with scientists and nonprofit funders whose work impacts the entire biomedical research and training community
- Interns will also be offered the opportunity attend a fall regional event in Nashville to meet with members of the Sarnoff Foundation community in the region.
- Gain exposure to the professional culture in a non-profit scientific organization
- Network with scientific foundation professionals and others in the biomedical research community
- Be an active participant in a national scientific meeting which critically evaluates topics in cardiovascular science with emphasis on research designs, methodologies, and outcomes linking the basic sciences to clinical problems.
INTERNSHIP DETAILS
- Internship will start in October 2023 and run through May 2024.
- Internship is remote, unpaid, part-time (1-4 hours per week, variable)
- The intern will support the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation as needed and gain new skills through phone calls and virtual meetings.
- As part of the internship, there will be mandatory attendance at the April 25-27, 2024 meeting in San Francisco. Travel expenses to attend this meeting will be paid by the Sarnoff Foundation.

Eligibility requirements
- Applicants must be a current Vanderbilt University PhD student or a current postdoctoral fellow.
- All PhD students must have completed all coursework for their degree prior to the start of the internship.
- Biomedical PhD students must also have passed their qualifying exams before the application deadline.
- Students and postdocs may not participate in more than one internship at a time. More than one application may be submitted at a single time, but only one position can be accepted.
