ASM Kadner Institute for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scientists in Preparation for Careers in Microbiology

Posted by on Monday, December 16, 2013 in Uncategorized .

The goal of the ASM Kadner Institute is to give senior graduate students and early-career postdoctoral fellows hands-on training to develop the skills needed for a successful career in microbiology, and to introduce them to the broad range of careers in the field. The Institute takes place as an intensive, five-day workshop that mixes formal presentations, small group activities, informal discussions, and networking. Each Institute trains up to 36 participants. Participants have the opportunity to develop a research grant, participate in peer review, and develop an effective oral presentation. Prior to attending, each participant prepares a preliminary grant proposal, a short scientific presentation, and curriculum vitae to be critiqued and evaluated onsite by faculty and peer scientists. During the Institute, faculty meet with the students in small groups to discuss, critique, and improve the written and oral presentations. Additional sessions address ethics, teaching, laboratory management, and a variety of career opportunities in the microbiological sciences.

The 2014 Kadner Institute will be Saturday, July 19 – Wednesday, July 23 in California. The application deadline is May 15, 2014. More information and application details are available at the institute website.
