The Engineering Biology Research Consortium (EBRC) aims to be the leading organization in the US to bring together the engineering biology community to provide the future vision for the field, catalyze leading-edge research and education programs, and promote dialogue about synthetic biology among policy-makers and other members of the public. Its mission is to strengthen the research and education communities, articulate compelling research visions and goals, and align those visions and goals with pressing national and global challenges, all while engaging the research and education communities, government and industry stakeholders, and the public about the opportunities and challenges of engineering biology.
The Director for Research Roadmapping will be responsible for EBRC’s annual roadmapping process. This position will conduct public policy (science policy) research related to the advancement of the field of synthetic biology. Working with EBRC’s academic and institutional membership, the director will work to develop a roadmap to help address technical challenges in the context of national and global needs. Working with EBRC’s Executive Director and other leadership, the director will develop an annual roadmapping process including mechanisms for ongoing communication with the broader community. The director will be responsible for implementing the roadmapping process and for disseminating the resulting roadmap broadly to both the engineering biology and broader communities. They will be the lead author on the final publication. The EBRC roadmapping process is expected to incorporate input from other EBRC activities including retreats, ad hoc workshops, and policy engagement activities.
Responsibilities:
Core duties of the position include, but are not limited to:
● Developing, with the Executive Director, the process for preparing EBRC’s annual research roadmap.
● Drafting, editing, and publishing a research roadmap for engineering biology with input from the 45+ academic members and industry representatives working toward consensus on the content. Presenting roadmap results.
● Researching the current funding mechanisms for the field, identifying and assessing barriers and opportunities that will allow for success and recommending actions based on that research.
● Independently analyzing both the state of the field and policy issues from various sectors to be synthesized and published.
● Incorporating non-technical topics (e.g. security, training/education, regulation, etc…) critical to engineering biology into the roadmap and related activities.
● Developing expert knowledge on trends in national and global research in engineering biology and periodically publishing and presenting on these trends.
● Maintaining relationships with the academic and industrial research communities, including those beyond EBRC, as well as relevant policy communities.
Minimum/Basic Qualifications required at the time of application:
The candidate must have a PhD or equivalent degree in a field related to engineering biology (e.g. bioengineering, chemical engineering, biology, chemistry, biophysics, etc…).
Additional Qualifications:
The candidate must have demonstrated expertise in science policy and the ability to work at the interface of early-stage research and government. Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills, including experience writing for diverse audiences. The candidate must have a technical background and the requisite professional experience in order to independently conduct the research and publish the resulting roadmapping.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working directly with US government agencies to understand their goals and needs. Prior research roadmapping experience a plus, but not required.
Salary: This is a full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience.
