East, West Coast Courses to Help Grad Students & Postdocs Transition to Biotech

Posted by on Friday, March 15, 2019 in Announcements, Workshops and Seminars .

The American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) is offering two week-long courses this summer to help them transition to careers in biotech. Of 130 participants from 2014-2016, 70% now have nonacademic jobs in industry, regulatory affairs, or tech transfer; the remainder are still in training or in academia. Moreover, the cohorts have remained close networking groups through social media. If any of your grad students are considering a move from academia to industry, then this course will help them succeed.

In the summer of 2019 ASCB is offering two courses, one on the East Coast, in partnership with University of Massachusetts Lowell, the Manning School of Business, from June 2-8, and the other in partnership with Keck Graduate Institute, in Claremont, CA, from July 7-13. Each course can accommodate up to 50 graduate students and postdocs (international and domestic). The course fee is $875, and some partial, needs-based scholarships are available.

Course Objectives:

• Gain an understanding of how science is conducted and commercialized in industry through case study analysis and group problem-solving exercises. Topics will include commercializing science, business models, market assessment, innovation management, and networks and entrepreneurship.

• Learn about careers for scientists in industry, and how to best leverage your analytical PhD skill set for a professional career

• Network with industry guests and other course participants

• Learn interdisciplinary teamwork through a team project

The course is primarily designed for graduate students with at least three years of scientific research experience, postdocs, and non-tenure-track junior scientists within 7 years of graduating with a PhD, though all are welcome to apply.

The deadline to apply is April 15, so please forward this email to anyone who might be interested.

The application is straightforward, and the only stipulation is that applicants must be or become an ASCB member. Click here for more information and to apply.
