Work involves viral surveillance for hepatitis and retroviruses, virus discovery of new and/or rare viral strains, and evaluation of emerging pathogens. Support commercial assay development by studying the impact of virus genetic variation on diagnostic assay performance. Develop prototype assays for serological and molecular detection of infectious agents. In addition, act as scientific and technical expert in infectious diseases to support assay development teams, marketing, and customers.

Successful candidate is expected to:

  • work independently to design, conduct, and evaluate experimentation; set future directions, identify technical alternatives
  • work as part of a team and transition over time to manage and lead research team
  • demonstrate strong grasp scientific fundamentals and apply these to solve technical challenges
  • develop reagents, assays, and methodologies to identify viral variants and/or improve upon existing approaches
  • communicate technical information to scientific and non-scientific audiences; have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • establish and conduct research studies with external collaborators
  • publish data in peer-reviewed journals and present data at international conferences

Skills:
Candidate should have a strong record of success in research, preferably some of which entails research pertaining to infectious diseases. Requires extensive experience in molecular biology and protein biochemistry. Molecular expertise in primer design, nucleic acid extraction and amplification techniques, automated Sanger DNA sequencing, next-generation DNA sequencing, sequence analysis including phylogenetics, and method development and optimization. Experience with bioinformatics is a plus; analysis of large data sets, software programming, pipeline design, database management. In protein biochemistry experience in protein purification, protein binding assays, immunoassays, and proteomics is advantageous.

Competent in computer skills including Microsoft Office applications and specialized DNA sequence analysis programs (i.e. Sequencher, Lasergene, PHYLIP, Bioedit).
